a story that fit the times

This story is clearly a product of its times.

The initial setup is that some con men have escaped prison in a space ship and need to make a big hit so they have some money to start a new life.

One of them had overheard that a nearby planet had something so important on it that no one was allowed to land on it. He didn't know what it was, but it was definitely a big deal.

They land and find that their ship has problems such that they cannot take off again for a few days. This is a problem because it turns out that the planet is populated by huge dinosaurs that are almost as big as the ship.

Soon one friendly dinosaur (which looks similar to a brontosaurus) walks up and starts scratching its back on a fin of the ship. In order to get the beast to go away they take the fire fighting equipment on the ship and fill it with flammable liquid and fire a stream of flame at the massive creature. The dinosaur actually enjoys this and goes so far as to lift its leg to let them spray fire under its belly.

Eventually it walks away from the ship. It's at this point that they notice that one of the crew is missing. He has gone to an air lock and attempted to fire a weapon to scare the creature off. But, before he could do so he collapsed in a happy haze.

Shortly thereafter we learn that he's actually tripping in a drug induced fantasy. They described the smell as "super pot".

This is where the story shows itself to be a product of its times. To me this actually seems like a pretty comical turn in the story.

The super pot is obviously the thing on this planet that the authorities are so concerned about.

The rest of the story involves finding out where the pot is and how to gather enough of it to fill the holds of the ship. Some of them start smoking it and that of course causes problems because they're on the run and need to get away before the police show up. There is of course an "it was too good to be true" ending that's reasonably satisfying.

It's actually kind of silly at points. I enjoyed it.
